When you need to create ID cards with advanced graphics and security features, Retransfer Printers are usually the way to go. They’re capable of outputting photo-quality images and detailed text. The reverse-transfer (‘retransfer’) technology they use also makes the finished cards harder to tamper with.

Retransfer printers have a specialised printhead that never actually touches the card. First, they print text and colour images onto a thin layer of transparent film; then they stick the film to the card using heat and pressure. The process creates a thermal bond between film and plastic surface, creating high-quality ID cards that are less susceptible to fraud and hold up well against daily wear & tear.

Retransfer printers can offer greater print consistency than other printers because they’re less dependent on card quality (uneven or poorly constructed cards sometimes affect traditional card printers’ output). And since the printhead doesn’t touch the card surface, it’s less likely to suffer damage or malfunction. Retransfer printing is also edge-to-edge capable, meaning it covers the entire body of the card.
