Choosing an ID card printer

The decision is simpler than the catalogue suggests. Three questions settle most of it.

• How many cards a year? Under a few hundred, an entry-level single-sided machine such as the Evolis Badgy 200 or IDP Smart 31 does the job. Into the thousands, look at a workhorse like the Evolis Primacy 2, Magicard 600 or Zebra ZXP Series 7 with a bigger hopper and a faster print engine.
• One side or two? A dual-sided printer flips the card automatically, so terms and conditions, emergency contacts or a barcode go on the back in a single pass. Single-sided printers can do the same by hand, which is fine for small runs and tedious for large ones.
• Does the card need to do anything? If it opens doors or logs attendance, the printer needs the matching encoder: magnetic stripe, MIFARE or HID proximity. Tell us which access control system you run and we will match the option.

Ribbons, cards and the small things that keep a printer running

A card printer is only as good as what goes into it. Lanyards, holders and reels

Once the card is printed it has to be worn, and worn safely. Plain lanyards with breakaway clips are the standard for schools and hospitals, where a snagged lanyard is a hazard.
